Tips for Getting a Custom Tattoo

When you're ready to reach out to an artist, keep these general "best practices" in mind to make the process smoother:

  • Bring References, Not Just Descriptions: Even if your idea is totally unique, having a few photos of tattoos you like, or even just images of the vibe or style (e.g., "I like this artist's shading" or "I like this font style"), helps the artist understand your vision much faster.

  • Expect a Consultation: For custom work, most reputable shops will want to schedule a brief consultation or have you fill out an inquiry form. This ensures you and the artist are on the same page before they start drawing.

  • Budget for a Deposit: Almost all shops that do custom work require a deposit to secure your appointment and compensate the artist for the time they spend drawing your design. This is standard industry practice and is usually applied to the final cost of the tattoo.

  • Check Portfolios First: Don't just pick a shop based on location alone. Spend time looking at the Instagram pages or websites of the specific artists at these shops. If you want a fine-line floral piece, look for an artist who specializes in fine-line; if you want a bold, traditional piece, look for someone with a strong portfolio in that style.

Do you have a specific style in mind for your tattoo, like realism, American traditional, or something else? We will be able to help you narrow down which artist would be the best fit!

Tips for a Smooth Walk-In Experience

To make sure your visit goes as smoothly as possible, keep these tips in mind:

  • Call Ahead: Even for shops that accept walk-ins, it is always a good idea to call the shop before you head over. The person at the front desk can give you a heads-up on current wait times or tell you if an artist is available that day.

  • Bring Your ID: This is non-negotiable. No legitimate tattoo studio will tattoo you without a valid government-issued photo ID.

  • Be Flexible: Walk-in availability is often best for flash designs (pre-drawn art) or smaller, simpler pieces. If you have a highly detailed or large custom piece in mind, you will likely need to book a consultation first.

  • Timing Matters: If you can, try to show up closer to when the shop opens. Walk-in slots at popular shops can fill up quickly by the afternoon, especially on weekends.

  • Bring Cash: While many shops accept cards, some still prefer cash for smaller walk-in tattoos, and it’s always helpful to have it on hand just in case.
